Memory Lane: Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled is one of those places the internet has fully romanticised. You know the vibe. Perfect light, perfect water, perfect little island church floating dramatically in the middle like it’s auditioning for a fairytale.

We visited for just one day as part of our Balkan and Eastern Europe trip, and it rained the second we got off the bus. Classic timing. Still, even with grey skies and damp paths, Bled was undeniably pretty. The lake has this calmness to it that doesn’t really care what the weather is doing.

We walked along the lakeshore and kept stopping for photos, because the views kept shifting and somehow still looked good. I will say though, I was slightly disappointed when I realised how far the islet actually sits from the shore. The internet makes it feel closer, like you could practically wave at it. In real life, it’s more of a “squint and admire” situation.

One little fact I loved: it’s the only natural island in Slovenia, and Bled Castle above the lake is often described as the oldest in the country, first mentioned in 1011.

And yes, we tried the kremšnita. Worth it. No notes. 🍰
