Memory Lane: Boppard Wine Tasting in the Rhine Valley (Germany)
After exploring Boppard, we finished the day with a wine tasting at Vineum Wine Shop, a cosy little vinothek in the old town where you can sit at the counter and sample local wines without committing to a full vineyard tour. It’s relaxed, friendly, and the kind of place that makes Rhine Valley wine feel approachable rather than fussy.
Wine has been part of life here for well over a thousand years, with vines grown on the steep slopes of the Bopparder Hamm since the Middle Ages, helped along by slate soils and a warm Rhine-side microclimate. The tasting usually includes a mix of regional wines, often a crisp Riesling, a light Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), and something seasonal.
We tried three wines in total, but the one that really stayed with me was the Eiswein. Sweet, intense, and completely different from anything I usually drink, it felt more like a treat than a glass, and I ended up buying a bottle to take home because when a wine becomes part of the memory, you don’t leave it behind.
