Gozo in a Day: Tuktuks, Cliffs & Coastal Caves

We took an 8-hour day trip from our hotel in Sliema to explore Gozo on a tuktuk. Our adventure began with a hotel pick-up, joining other tuktuk tour customers. We were driven to Ċirkewwa ferry terminal, and after a short 30-minute ferry ride, we arrived at Gozo’s ferry terminal. There, our tour leaders met us and guided us to our tuktuks, ready to explore the island in a fun, breezy, and unforgettable way.

🏰 Ta’ Kenuna Tower

Our first stop was Ta’ Kenuna Tower, perched on a hill with stunning views across Gozo. The 19th-century tower, originally built as a semaphore tower, offered panoramic vistas over the island and even glimpses of Malta on a clear day. It was the perfect spot to stretch our legs, snap a few photos, and soak in Gozo’s peaceful countryside.

🏞️ Calypso Viewpoint

Next, we stopped at the viewpoint overlooking Calypso Bay. From up here, the sweeping view of Ramla Bay and its striking red sand beach was absolutely breathtaking. Even without entering the cave itself, the panorama gave us a real sense of Gozo’s dramatic coastal scenery.

🧂 Gozo Salt Pans

Our tuktuk next took us to the famous Gozo Salt Pans. Stretching along the rocky coastline, these centuries-old pans are still used to harvest sea salt in the traditional way. The geometric patterns of the pans against the turquoise water made for a striking sight, and the location gave us some fantastic coastal views.

⛪ Ta’ Pinu Basilica

Next, we visited the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu, one of Gozo’s most iconic religious sites. The neo-Romanesque church stands dramatically against the countryside, drawing pilgrims from all over Malta. The surrounding gardens added a peaceful atmosphere, making it a memorable stop on our tour.

🏰 Citadella, Victoria

Our tuktuk then brought us to the Citadella in Victoria, Gozo’s historic fortified city. We didn’t have much time to explore, but even a brief walk around allowed us to appreciate the beauty of the walls, the cathedral, and the charming streets within. From the vantage points, we enjoyed panoramic views across the island and its villages.

🏘️ Victoria’s Charming Streets

After the Citadella, we wandered through the little streets of Victoria. The narrow lanes are full of character, lined with traditional stone houses, quaint shops, and tiny cafes. It was a lovely way to experience the local life, away from the main tourist spots.

🍴 Lunch at Lion’s Den

After exploring Victoria, we stopped for lunch at Lion’s Den. The restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a chance to recharge before continuing our tour. The food was hearty and flavorful, giving us a taste of local Gozo cuisine, and the setting provided a nice break to relax and enjoy the island vibe.

🌊 Sanap Cliffs

Next, our tuktuk whisked us to the stunning Sanap Cliffs. Perched high above the sea, the cliffs offered breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and deep blue Mediterranean waters. We lingered here, taking in the fresh sea air and snapping photos of the unforgettable panorama.

⛪ Rotunda of St John the Baptist

Before heading to the coast, we stopped at the Rotunda of St John the Baptist, a striking church with a beautifully designed interior and a peaceful atmosphere. Its elegant dome and historic architecture made it a noteworthy Gozo landmark. Outside, a bright red telephone box stood as a quirky reminder of the island’s colonial history, adding a pop of colour to the serene surroundings.

🏖️ Xlendi Beach

Our last tuktuk stop was Xlendi Beach, a picturesque bay framed by cliffs and dotted with colourful boats. The turquoise water looked incredibly inviting, and the promenade was lined with charming cafes—perfect for a quick walk and a taste of the relaxed seaside vibe.

⛴️ Gozo Coastal Boat Tour

After the tuktuk tour, we headed back to Gozo ferry terminal to board a Gozo Fast Ferry for a coastal boat tour. Cruising along the rugged shoreline, we spotted the stunning Santa Maria Caves in Comino, with their dramatic rock formations and crystal-clear waters. Next, we approached the famous Blue Lagoon, known for its turquoise waters. Swimming was supposed to be part of the plan, but the sea was too rough that day, so the boat returned us to Malta’s main island. We disembarked at Marfa Jetty, where a bus was waiting to take us back to our hotel in Sliema, ending a full 8-hour day of adventure across Gozo and its surrounding waters.

✨ Final Thoughts

Our day in Gozo was packed with breathtaking views, charming streets, and unforgettable coastal scenery. From the heights of Ta’ Kenuna Tower and the Citadella to the rugged beauty of Sanap Cliffs and the turquoise waters of the Santa Maria Caves and Blue Lagoon, it was a full-on adventure in just 8 hours. Even with a tight schedule, the tuktuk and boat tour made exploring the island fun, breezy, and effortless. Gozo’s mix of history, nature, and local charm makes it the perfect day trip from Sliema—and one that leaves you dreaming of coming back for more.
