Demel, Vienna
This is a Memory Lane post from our 2017 European café trail.
Vienna has a reputation for café culture, but Demel felt like something even more specific. Not just a café, but a proper old-school pastry house, the kind of place that makes you sit up a little straighter without even realising.
Founded in 1786, Demel is one of Vienna’s most iconic Konditorei, with a history tied to the city’s royal and imperial past. And honestly, it shows. The whole place feels polished and traditional, with that quiet, elegant atmosphere Vienna does so well.
I went in for a simple plan: cake and coffee. Nothing dramatic, just one of those classic travel moments where you want to slow down and enjoy where you are, even if the rest of the day is packed with sightseeing. I chose a slice of Anna Torte, one of Demel’s famous cakes, and paired it with coffee as the city carried on outside.
It wasn’t just about the dessert either. It was the feeling of being somewhere with real history, where people have been doing this exact thing for centuries: sitting down, ordering something sweet, and letting Vienna move around them.
If Café Sacher is the name everyone knows, Demel felt like the one you go to when you want the experience to feel a little more timeless.
