Café Gerbeaud, Budapest

This is a Memory Lane post from our 2017 European café trail.

Some cafés are famous because they’re beautiful. Café Gerbeaud is famous because it feels like it belongs to Budapest’s story.

I knew about the New York Café before I even arrived, but I chose Gerbeaud instead. As tempting as the chandeliers and the hype were, I wanted to sit somewhere with real roots, a place that had been part of the city for generations, not just somewhere that looked good in photos.

Café Gerbeaud has been around since 1858, and it still carries that old-world elegance. The kind where you slow down without trying, speak a little quieter, and suddenly feel like you’re on a much more glamorous version of your own holiday.

I ordered a slice of Dobos torte, one of Hungary’s most classic cakes, layered and rich with that signature caramel top. It was exactly the sort of thing you come to a place like this for, and it matched the atmosphere perfectly. Sitting there with coffee and cake, watching the world go by, felt like a proper Budapest moment.

It’s the kind of stop that proves you don’t need hours of free time to make a tour feel personal. Sometimes all you need is a historic café, a good slice, and a little space to breathe.
