Cappadocia Balloon Ride: Floating Above Fairy Chimneys and Dreams

Cappadocia is a place like no other. Its fairy chimneys — tall, spindly rock formations shaped over millennia by volcanic ash and erosion — create a landscape unlike anywhere else. This unique geology draws travellers from all over the world. But the real magic happens before the sun rises, high above in a hot air balloon. This was one of those bucket list experiences that lives up to every expectation—and then some.

We spent two days in Cappadocia, staying at Melis Cave Hotel in Ürgüp. Our balloon ride was booked through our tour company, so all we had to do was hand over payment to the balloon company when we checked in. Simple and hassle-free.

Pick-up was at 4am. We were up and ready, wrapped in sleepy anticipation. The hotel handed out hot drinks to keep us warm while we waited. When the car arrived, the crew said they weren’t sure if the flight would go ahead and that we needed to wait 10 minutes. After the wait, the flight was cancelled due to drizzle. Disappointing but fair enough — weather is weather.

The balloon company promised to try again the next morning, same pick-up time. Bright and early, our group piled into the car and headed to the launch site. As we neared, dozens of balloons were being prepared for takeoff.

The scene was unreal. I had never seen so many balloons in one place, glowing like giant lanterns lighting up the dawn. Pure magic.

We reached our launch site just as our balloon was being lit up. Watching it come alive was thrilling and nerve-wracking. I kept thinking, how can this giant wicker basket carry 20 people? Getting in was a funny moment — more of a clumsy scramble than a graceful step, with staff lending a helping hand as we climbed into the basket like oversized hamsters in a wicker wheel.

Then, a loud bang, and we lifted off, rising with hundreds of balloons all around us. It felt dreamlike, like drifting inside a painting. Your eyes did not know where to look. Balloons floated everywhere, while below stretched the otherworldly landscape, strange rock formations reaching into the distance. We watched in awe, completely absorbed by the magic around us.

All these sights surrounded us as the sun began to rise, casting golden light over the landscape. We floated over places we had visited the day before, spotting details we had not seen close up. At times, we skimmed right past the rock formations, close enough to touch.

I could not stop staring at the scene, balloons drifting gently under a breathtaking sunrise, the landscape glowing in warm light.

Eventually, it was time to descend, gently drifting back to earth. We spotted the crew driving toward our landing spot. Then, a thud, and we were back on solid ground.

It was a truly amazing experience. No wonder it is a major bucket list must. This ride stays with you long after you land. Afterward, we toasted with sparkling wine and were handed certificates — proof we had conquered the skies.
