Angelina, Paris (Rue de Rivoli)
This is a Memory Lane post from our 2017 European café trail.
Angelina in Paris is one of those cafés that gets mentioned in 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, and for us it was a deliberate stop on our 2016 trip. We went to the original location on Rue de Rivoli, the one people picture when they talk about Angelina.
Inside, it felt properly old-school. Elegant, calm, and slightly formal, with that classic Parisian atmosphere that doesn’t need to try too hard. Angelina first opened in 1903, and it still carries that sense of history, like it has been part of the city’s routine for generations.
We ordered the famous hot chocolate (L’Africain) and shared a Mont Blanc. The hot chocolate really is as rich as everyone says. Thick, intense, and not something you rush through. The Mont Blanc looked delicate and neat, and it was exactly the kind of dessert you remember afterwards, sweet without being too much.
What makes it even more of a standout for me is that we ended up coming back again in 2017. Not because we needed to tick it off twice, but because it genuinely felt worth repeating. Same café, same classics, and still just as busy. If anything, returning a second time confirmed that it wasn’t just a one-off travel moment. It really is one of those Paris stops that sticks.
Yes, it’s popular, and it’s definitely not a secret. But it’s popular for a reason. It feels like a proper Paris moment, the kind you’re glad you made time for.
