What We Ate in Salamanca

Salamanca isn’t just a city for sightseeing; it’s a city that truly celebrates food. From golden, flaky pastries to rich, hearty meals and irresistible sweet treats, every corner offered something tempting to try. We couldn’t resist sampling as much as possible, and each bite was a delicious reflection of the city’s vibrant culinary culture.

Viandas

While wandering the streets, we stopped at Viandas, a popular Salamanca deli and bakery known for its high-quality cured meats and traditional pastries. Here we tried a slice of Hornazo, a savory pastry filled with pork, chorizo, and cheese. The golden, flaky crust and rich filling made it a perfect mid-walk snack and a real taste of local flavor.

Convento de las Dueñas

No visit to Salamanca is complete without a stop at Convento de las Dueñas. The convent sells homemade cookies made by the nuns. We picked up a few to enjoy while wandering, and they were sweet, buttery, and perfectly crumbly. The convent itself is stunning, with beautiful architecture worth a quick look inside.

Tip: The cookies make a great souvenir to take home.

Restaurante Plaza Mayor

For dinner, we ate inside Restaurante Plaza Mayor, right in the heart of the city. We tried huevos rotos, perfectly fried eggs over crispy potatoes, and grilled cuttlefish, tender and flavorful. The interior was warm and inviting, and we enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the square through the windows. We forgot to take photos of our dinner, but the flavors were memorable and a perfect way to end our day in Salamanca.

Final Thoughts

Salamanca is a city that’s just as delightful for its food as it is for its history and architecture. From a savory slice of Hornazo at Viandas to sweet cookies at Convento de las Dueñas, and finishing with a hearty dinner at Restaurante Plaza Mayor, we left feeling full and inspired. Even with just one day and night, the city offers a taste of its culture through every bite, making it a perfect destination for food lovers on the go.
